Windmill |
One of the main symbols of Netherlands is related to the country’s famous, numerous and beautiful windmills. Netherlands came to be closely associated with these machines. There are around 1,200 of them, so it’s no wonder they have become iconic. The Dutch people built these windmills for centuries and for different purposes like land drainage, corn milling and saw milling. The windmills have become a symbol of the Dutch struggle with water and an icon of the Dutch landscape.
Even if the windmills are used in so many places in Netherlands and windmill related automated mechanisms have been developed and used in other countries, the Dutch ones are still rather primitive using canvas sails but that’s probably what makes them so special.

So, if you want to give Netherlands a try, then here are some of the most important windmills that should be on your must-see list. Just imagine that some of them date back to the beginning of the 19th century.
One of the most important places where you can see windmills is Kinderdijk which has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This picturesque area is home to nineteen mills that remind people of how floods were prevented.
